In a recent interview with OUT magazine, the actor explained that while he has previously identified as straight, he now views his sexuality from a more fluid perspective.

“My stance toward life, though, is that I always try to surrender to the mystery of not being in charge,” he said. “I have an openness to any impulses that may arise within me at any time.”

Although he was quick to clarify his statement: “If I were to identify, I would identify as heterosexual.”

This is not the first time Garfield has talked about his sexuality. In a 2017 Q&A panel, the actor said “I am a gay man right now, pretty much, just without the physical act,” after which he faced public backlash.

The actor’s comments came while he was promoting his new starring role in a new Broadway production of Angels in America, a metaphorical examination of queerness and AIDS in the 1980s.
